More Info on Republic Commando in The Clone Wars

Post by Yaznee! L4DS on Fri Aug 13, 2010 11:58 pm

Yesterday at Star Wars Celebration V, a large crowd cheered jubilantly for the reveal that the Republic Commandos are coming to Star Wars: The Clone Wars
Season 3 – which we learned via a clip from the show, in which a group
of Commandos land on the rain-soaked water planet of Kamino, meeting
with a group of Jedi. Today, I had the chance to speak to the show's
supervising director, Dave Filoni, to find out a bit more about the decision to bring these videogame characters into the animated series.

Filoni knew fans were extremely happy to learn about the Commandos
inclusion into the show, but stressed that as far as the episode they
debut in, "They have a very, very, very minor role in this whole thing.
Don't get uber-excited. But just to get them in [at all] opens up the
possibility that you will see more of them. That's the way we do it,
when we make the computer models."

Speaking about what the Commandos meant to him, Filoni told me, "I loved
that game when it came out. Even the cut scenes in it were very
inspirational to me. The Geonosians were suddenly very creepy in the
darkness. That influenced us when we did [the Season 2 episode] 'Landing at Point Rain.'"

So what made Filoni decide now was the time to bring them to The Clone Wars? "The really comes down to, can we get the [animation] model built?"

Filoni noted, "I've had fans come up to me for years now, asking, 'When
are we going to see Republic Commandos?' And a lot of times the answer
is very simple – which is we just don't have the bandwidth to get the
character models built. And finally, one day, I had that scene in the
rain happening and I was like, 'Let's just bite the bullet, guys. I'm
calling it an emergency here – let's build these things! Get 'em done
and have them.' And that's really how it happened. And I wanted to do
it! Because I know fans love them; I love them. I love the work that
Lucas Arts does… For me to be able to tip the cap to a sister company is
great."

As to which exact Commandos we're looking at, Filoni explained, "Those
Commandos we very specifically made the Delta Squad, so that would be
those guys. I can say that. Their helmets and armor, we attempted to
paint up as accurately as we could. I was on the phone with some of the
guys from Lucas Arts, getting stuff sent up to us for accurate
reference. We did the best we could [to match the game]."

When I asked Filoni if his downplaying of the Commandos role in their
first appearance meant they only were in the one scene shown yesterday,
he grinned, and replied, "We'll see."

The Clone Wars: Season 3 premieres September 17th on Cartoon Network.
