Shooter Overload

Post by Yaznee! L4DS on Fri Jul 02, 2010 11:19 am

If there's one thing that we took away from E3 2010 this year, it's
that people like shooters and publishers have no problems throwing giant
sums of money around to get more on the market. From first-person
shooters like Crysis 2 and
RAGE to third-person titles like Dead Space 2
and Red Faction:
Armageddon
, you should have no trouble finding a game where the
focus is blasting things to pieces. In case the modern battlefields and
fantastical futuristic weaponry have blurred together to the point where
you're 95 percent certain a game called Medal of Dutyzone Ops: Bad
Gears 3 – Reachstorm The Line Vietnam actually exists, here's a list of
some of the bigger titles coming out in 2010 and 2011 to help sort it
all out. Please keep in mind this is not meant to be a wholly comprehensive list,
but does include many games covered recently on IGN which we hope turn
out to be pretty good.
Brink

" Brink takes
place in 2044 AD on a city known as Ark. It's massive, it's floating and
it's home to the two warring factions in the game: Security and
Resistance. Security is the high-powered, tech-savvy repressive
superpower and Resistance is the slightly more low-tech option (think
the Empire and the Rebel Alliance from Star Wars). Yes, there are two
full campaign modes to play through, each of which with its own unique
storyline and cutscenes to flesh out characters and the back story of
this floating megalopolis."

BulletStorm

" As soon as I'm a minute into the E3 demo of Bulletstorm,
the next shooter from People Can Fly
(Painkiller) and Epic Games (Gears of War), I know that this is a game
you have to play to really experience. I'd seen the presentation a month
ago, but I couldn't tell from watching it if the crazy
Need-for-Speed-meets-first-person-shooter combo system would draw me in
for more than a few moments. Having finally tried it out for myself,
though, I can already tell that I'm a sick, sick person, easily addicted
to finding just one more way to creatively kill my enemies. "
Call
of Duty: Black Ops

" Since Call of Duty is pretty much an annual thing now, it may be a
little difficult to get excited about each release. Even though the
formula may be familiar at this point, this year's game, Treyarch's
Black Ops, is still looking like it'll deliver an exciting first-person
shooting experience. At E3 2010 we saw a demo of two stages. The first,
called WMD, took place in a snowy Russian mountain range as a covert ops
unit tried to storm a facility. "

Crysis
2
" Cevat Yerli, CEO and President of Crytek, the developer behind Crysis
2, wants the newest demo of his studio's game to demonstrate all the
ways the franchise has changed since the original Crysis. And change it
has: the days of fighting stupid alien enemies or having to manage a
large number of suit powers are gone. Gone also are the gigantic jungle
environments that became synonymous with the original, replaced instead
by partially destroyed city levels that Yerli calls "Orchestrated
Sandboxes." "Dead
Space 2

" Dead Space 2 follows the original game's protagonist Isaac Clarke,
only this time he's a battle-hardened warrior. He still screams at the
top of his lungs as he stomps on bodies on the ground or when he's being
hurt -- he is human, after all -- but he has new abilities and weapons
that make him a murder machine without peer. In order to save ammo Isaac
can now use his Kinesis ability (think Force powers) to grab
dismembered limbs from his opponents, throwing them like deadly spikes
and impaling them against the environment. Alternatively, when he's in a
bind, Isaac can now utilize a Javelin Gun, shooting large spikes into
enemies that can also stick them to walls. "

F.E.A.R.
3

" Opening in a ruined apartment block, the demo was strictly co-op
(though we're assured that the single player campaign is virtually
identical in content to the co-op one). Paxton Fettel, now a ghost able
to inhabit his enemies' bodies, is a strategic character to use. His
ability to levitate enemies, keeping them immobile in the air, as well
as telekinetically lift barrels and other deadly objects, makes him a
powerful ally. In the context of the ruined apartment block, he was an
interesting counterpoint to Point Man's straight-faced gunplay.

Gears
of War 3
(Xbox 360 Only)

" If you've ever stepped into a later round of Horde Mode on one of the
higher difficulties, then you know how tough it can be to face off
against a group of Butchers or Boomers. Now imagine what it would be
like if those monsters were controlled by humans. Though the AI
controlled Gears soldiers in Beast Mode have plenty of firepower --
they'll come at you with giant mechanical ex-suits, the Hammer of Dawn,
and plenty of other nasty weapons and turrets -- and begin each round
outnumbering your side 15 to 5, most of the game is a blood and gore
fest at their expense.

Ghost
Recon: Future Soldier

" Ghost Recon Future
Soldier
has some similar features to the Ghost Recon Advanced
Warfighter (GRAW) franchise that preceded it, but this is definitely not
just a sequel with a slightly different name. With a host of new items
at the Ghost's disposal, as well as a new emphasis on four-player coop
-- rather than the squad commands from GRAW -- the hope is that this
will be the game that brings the franchise to the next level. To see how
it measures up to expectations, I got to see an updated demo at this

Halo:
Reach
(Xbox 360 Only)

" Firefight is back in Halo: Reach and Bungie is making some big
changes. The core idea remains the same -- team up with up to three
other friends and fight waves of Covenant invaders. After playing
several different iterations of Firefight at a recent Microsoft event, I
realized the script has been rewritten so drastically that the
experience feels entirely different. Here are the five biggest changes
being made to Firefight for Halo: Reach and how they make it a whole new
ballgame. "
